As literacy continues to be a priority in education, this session will look at engaging reluctant writers. Based on the evidence of an on-going literacy project, the session will focus on how in making games students are provided with an authentic purpose and audience for transactional writing as they write clues, descriptions and instructions for their players. What’s more, in providing the narrative context, that is the thread that holds the whole story together, authors are engaged in the creative process and creating multi-layered stories. The available 3D backgrounds or locations provide visual stimuli for a number of genres that may, if appropriate, be specified by the teacher. In making games, rather than employing what has already been made, students can choose to combine worlds and actions of their own making and build atmosphere relevant to the narrative they have planned. All writing can be captured in word-processing or storyboard format.
